Sandblasting
is the process using abrasive cast steel
shot or steel grit (SAND) to remove rust, scale, oil, soil, lubrication
grease, metal oxides, welding scale and etc from steel. Using compressed air
as a vehicle to transport the sand to attack the residue on the steel, and
remove it, leaving a clean base to paint or powder coat.
Sandblasting is also
used to relieve stress on welded items like tanks, frames and vehicle
chassis.
Powder coating
is a type of coating that is applied as a
free flowing dry powder. The coating is typically applied electrostatic and
is then cured in an oven at a heat of 200 degrees Celsius to allow it to
flow and form a skin. The skin has a smooth finish and is stronger and more
durable than conventional paint. Powder coating is used for the coating of
metals such as aluminum extrusions, major and domestic appliances,
automobile, motorcycle, bicycle parts, toolboxes, cabinets, gates, etc.
Advantages of powder
coating:
·
Powder coating emit a near zero
volatile organic compounds.
·
Powder coating produce a much
thicker than conventional liquid paint without running or sagging.
·
Powder coating over spray can
be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve a near 100% use of the
coating.
·
Powder coating produce lines
less hazardous waste than conventional liquid lines.
·
Powder coated items generally
have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated and vertical
coated items.

varies according to size and time required to sandblast an item. The general
cost of factory labor in Gauteng workshops is approximately R220/hr with a
normal work week of 45 hrs.
